yesterday and tomorrow

the elephants are proud to announce the release of their ninth studio album, to be released in two parts, yesterday and tomorrow. after embarking on a world tour in 2019, the boys began creating what was intended to become their ninth album. but when covid-19 hit, they were forced to work from their homes separately, which then led them to develop a new concept. a major shift from the club dancefloor electronica that was their eighth album, yesterday and tomorrow bring atmospheric hymns, blues rock, and gospel-infused americana, complete with acoustic guitar, strings, organ, horns, and female backing vocals.

the two-part album will also be an audiovisual film directed by øystein sture aspelund. filmed in norway with breathtaking visuals, the relationship between nature and culture was a huge inspiration to øystein and is represented in the film as a struggle between man and his environment. attached to the film will be the second ever documentary from the elephants, chronicling the making of the album from the homes of each elephants member, leading up to their physical reunion of recording and completing the album. this film will be the very first film from butterfly records to be screened on imax venues around the world for one night only in september. to experience the album and film through the immersive imax experience is sure to be an unforgettable event.

the first part of the album, yesterday, will be released june 12 and the second part, tomorrow, will release september 18 on butterfly records. the album will also be the first new album release to be available on the new butterfly records service vivarium, streaming early to those who pre-order.

along with the new album and film, the elephants will also release a brand new collection of live performances from the studio, today: live in studio. the elephants conceived this special release in lieu of performing in the canceled butterfly records world tour, and to reinterpret their past music into the stripped back and instrument-focused theme of their new album. the collection includes performances of album tracks and b-sides from their past works, unreleased tracks including a david bowie cover, and tracks from their new album. today: live in studio will be released july 31 on butterfly records.
